ایسا سوال تھا جو وہ پچھلے کئی مہینوں سے خود سے کر کرکے تھک چکی تھی۔

اسے یاد تھا پہلی مرتبہ اسی سڑک پر پسینے سے شرابور میلے کپڑوں میں ملبوس مرتضیٰ حیدر سے اس کی ملاقات ہوئی تھی۔ اس وقت اشفا کے پاپا بھی اس کے ہمراہ تھے۔

پاپا نے ہی مرتضیٰ کو پہچان کر گاڑی رکوائی اور پھر بڑے تپاک سے مرتضیٰ کو گلے سے لگایا۔ مرتضیٰ نے ٹریکٹر کے انجن کو بند کیا اور پھر سفید پگڑی نما چادر جو کہ شاید دھوپ سے بچنے کیلئے سر اور چہرے کو ڈھانپنے کی غرض سے لی تھی سے اپنا بے حد سرخ سفید چہرہ صاف کیا۔

”آپ گھر چلیں چچا جان! میں ابھی آتا ہوں۔“ مرتضیٰ نے بابا کو مخاطب کرتے ہوئے اک بھرپور نگاہ اس پر بھی ڈالی تھی۔

اشفا کا کوفت و جھنجھلاہٹ سے رواں دواں سلگ اٹھا۔ اسے اپنا یہ کزن قطعاً پسند نہیں آیا تھا بلکہ اسے تو حیات آباد میں بسنے والے مکینوں میں سے کوئی ایک بھی قابل توجہ نہیں لگا تھا اور اس وقت وہ ان سب سے ملنے کیلئے بے تاب تھی۔ اس کی آنکھیں بار بار نم ہو رہی تھیں۔ اک نرم گلابی ننھا وجود ، اس کے نقش بھی اس نے غور سے نہیں دیکھے تھے بار بار کھلکھلاتا ہوا نگاہوں کے سامنے آتا وہ بے چین ہو کر گاڑی کی اسپیڈ بڑھا دیتی۔

”تم کتنی سنگدل ماں ہو۔“ کوئی اس کے کان کے قریب چلایا تو اشفا نے بے ساختہ اپنے سرخ چمکیلے لبوں کو کچل ڈالا۔

”میرا بچہ ، میری جان ، میرا شازم۔“ اس کے دل میں ممتا کے سوتے پھوٹ پڑے تھے۔ اس ممتا ، محبت کو اس نے نفرتوں کی بھینٹ چڑھا دیا تھا۔ ایک مرتبہ نمرہ نے کہا تھا کہ ”اشفا تم بہت خود غرض ہو۔“ اور اشفا نے تو بہت عرصہ پہلے ہی اپنی خود
